A
Working Conference should foment more effective dissemination and integration
of knowledge, since everyone present can actively contribute to the creative
process, leading to a dialogue between humanists and scientists from around the
world. Previous Working Conferences have been held in the USA, in Santa Fe, New
Mexico, New Brunswick, New Jersey, St. Petersburg, Florida, and in Rio Piedras,
Puerto Rico; in Puebla and Mexico City, Mexico; in San Ramón, Costa Rica; in
Buenos Aires and Pinamar, Argentina; and in Cumaná, Venezuela.
The most successful papers at Ometeca Working Conferences
bring together aspects of the sciences and the humanities in such a way that
they take us beyond particular insights gained in each discipline. Papers that
juxtapose and show parallels between aspects of the sciences and the humanities
should do so in order to illuminate larger theoretical questions or suggest
theory that lead us toward a new praxis. Historical surveys are not useful for
their own sake, but should have relevance to a particular argument or larger
interdisciplinary interest. Authors are encouraged to take chances and to
explore new possibilities without sacrificing the rigor and standards of their
disciplines.
In order to participate in the Working Conference, a person
does not need to present a paper. The number of actual presenters will be
limited, since papers are not read before an audience. Instead, they are
distributed to participants before the working conference so that they may be
studied, and at the Working Conference they are discussed with the
participants.
Any questions should be referred Dr. Kevin Larsen or the
Ometeca Institute as listed above.
The University of
Wyoming is at 7220 feet above sea level, near mountains, museums, national and
state parks.

The articles in this issue are a widespread response to an
invitation that we launched last year to discuss relevant questions,
characters, testimonies and ideas
pertaining to the theme Humanities
and Science in The Age of the Great Oceanic Navigations. From the beginning
we were keenly aware of the immensity of this panorama. However, our
expectations were to convene a select number of authors examining far reaching
consequences of particular endeavors connected with the theme, in the spirit of
the OMETECA Institute. In keeping
with these aims, the papers are fine assessments of such timely situations and
facts, composed by their authors in a fascinating, scholarly manner. Whereas
they all mainly bear on the Hispanic world—whether the Pacific Rim, continental
America and peninsular Iberia—sciences, technology, medicine, art, language,
philosophy as well as religion find their proper expression therein. At all
times, we are in the hands of sensitive and knowledgeable people that love
their craft and subject matter. Each of the published articles makes for a
pleasurable and informative reading. In fact, they all contribute to enlighten
our current vistas of that momentous age that undoubtedly forged the way to our
own. Let the reader judge for himself.
As always, this issue is the fruit of
the labor of many people: the authors of the various articles, the book review
and the poem. We, the general editor and
guest editors, have tried to put their efforts together in this issue as best
we can. Whatever mistakes are ours, but
the good ideas and good will in this volume are theirs. Thank you all.

Prefacio
Los artículos en este volumen constituyen una amplia respuesta a la invitación,
que el año pasado hicimos, para discutir cuestiones importantes, caracteres,
testimonios e ideas que atañen al tema Humanidades
y Ciencia en la Era de las Grandes Navegaciones Oceánicas. Desde el
principio nos quedó muy claro la enormidad del planteamiento. Empero, nuestras
expectativas se cifraron en congregar a un selecto número de autores que
examinasen las consecuencias trascendentales de coyunturas particulares
conectadas con el tema, en el espíritu del Instituto
OMETECA. De acuerdo con estas miras, los documentos son muestras ejemplares
de indagaciones fascinantes sobre tales situaciones y hechos sobresalientes,
realizadas por sus autores con gran sagacidad académica. En tanto la mayoría de
los artículos quedan enmarcados en el Mundo Hispánico — sea éste la Cuenca del
Pacífico, la América Continental o la Península Ibérica — tanto ciencia como
tecnología, medicina, arte, lenguas y filosofía, y también religión, encuentran
acomodo en sus páginas. Todo el tiempo nos encontramos en manos de gente
sensitiva y conocedora que aman sus destrezas y temas de estudio. Cada uno de
los trabajos publicados nos ofrece una lectura placentera e informativa. De
hecho, todos ellos contribuyen a
iluminar nuestra visión actual de aquellas épocas magníficas que, sin
duda, forjaron los umbrales a través de los cuales ahora
transitamos. Sin embargo, sean los lectores quienes juzguen por sí mismos.
Como siempre, este número de Ometeca
es fruto de la labor de los varios autores de los artículos, la reseña del libro y el poema, que aquí
aparecen. Tanto el Editor General como los Editores Invitados hemos armado este
número con la mejor intención de incorporar los excelentes esfuerzos de todos

Guide for Authors
Ometeca
(ISSN 1041-3650) is a refereed scholarly publication devoted to the
relations of literature and science. It
publishes theoretical articles on the relations of literature and science in
general; critical studies on science in Hispanic and Luso-Brazilian
literatures and cultures; and science poetry.
Ometeca publishes material in three languages, English,
Portuguese, and Spanish.
Contributions to Ometeca
will be welcomed from throughout the world, in English, Spanish or Portuguese.
Manuscripts, following submission and style requirements described below, should
be forwarded to the Editor, at the address below.
All papers are subject to peer
review. Author(s) can suggest possible referees, including their name,
affiliation and email address. Copies of referees’ comments will be forwarded
to author(s) together with publication decision. Opinions expressed by
contributors to Ometeca are their own, and do not necessarily
represent the views of the editors or those of the Editorial Board of the
journal.
Only papers not previously published
will be considered. Authors must agree not to publish elsewhere papers
submitted to and accepted by the journal.
Copyright. Authors are
responsible for obtaining from the copyright holder permission to reproduce any
material for which copyright exists.
This applies to all illustrations, but does not apply to brief quotes of
material with appropriate attribution to their creators.
Submission. May be electronic
or hard copy. If electronic (i) please
use Word; (ii) specify hardware used (PC or Mac); (iii) do not mix tables and graphics,
if any, with the text file — include the text, tables and graphics as a
separate files; (iv) do not use bold or underline, use italics only for foreign
words or book titles. Do not use any
other formatting codes.
Title page. The title page
must contain: (i) the full title of the article; (ii) name of the author(s);
(iii) affiliation of the author(s) at the time the work was conducted; (iv)
full corresponding address of the author(s), telephone and fax numbers; (v)
email addresses; and (vi) a footnote giving any acknowledgements.
Style and references. All
typing must be double-spaced, Times New Roman 12, including all text, title,
captions, author affiliation, and references. Use centered subheadings for
sections. Do not use endnotes or footnotes.
All works cited must be listed under “Works Cited” at the end of the
paper, following MLA style. Avoid abbreviation of journal titles and incomplete
references. Ometeca follows the style guidelines of the MLA
Handbook for Writers of Research Papers, by Joseph Gibaldi (5th
ed. New York: Modern Language Association of America, 1999).
Sample citations in text: Do
not use footnotes or endnotes for citing works.
Use the parenthetical method described in the MLA Handbook. For example, “Hert and Marchionini found
that,” or “... as found in other studies (Hert & Marchionini; Clarke &
Willett).” Whether paraphrasing or quoting directly, the source must be
credited. For a direct quote supply page numbers, e.g. (Anderson 445). Also provide page numbers when citing only a
part of a work.

Ometeca (ISSN
1041-3650) es una publicación de investigación teórica, crítica, y de creación
poética dedicada a las relaciones de las ciencias con la literatura, y viceversa. Ésta publica artículos teóricos sobre las
relaciones de las ciencias con la literatura en general; estudios críticos
sobre la ciencia en las literaturas/culturas
hispánicas y luso-brasileiras, y poesía de este género. Ometeca publica artículos y
poesía en tres idiomas: español, inglés y portugués.
Cada manuscrito
debe contar con un resumen del artículo.
Las opiniones expresadas por los contribuyentes de Ometeca
no son necesariamente las de los editores o las del Consejo Editorial de la
revista. Los artículos que serán
considerados para su publicación por el Consejo Editorial de Ometeca
tienen que ser inéditos.
Derechos de autor. Los
autores son responsables de obtener el permiso de reproducción de cualquier
material que utilicen en su trabajo para ser publicado por Ometeca. Las citas breves no
necesitan permiso del autor siempre que su autoría sea atribuida a sus
creadores.
Envío de artículos. Los
trabajos se pueden enviar electrónicamente o en una versión impresa por correos
o por compañías de envíos como Federal Express o UPS. Si se hace por vía
electrónica, (i) utilice “Word”; (ii) especifique si el documento que envía lo

Estilo. Todo el texto, el título y los
subtítulos, las cursivas, la afiliación académica u otro tipo de afiliación,
libros y artículos consultados, etc deben utilizar el tipo de letra Times New Roman 12. Centre los
subtítulos de cada sección. No utilice notas al pie de la página o al final del
artículo. Todos los trabajos citados deben ser nombrados en la sección “Trabajos
citados” al final del trabajo — los autores deben consultar la sección sobre
estilo de la Modern Language Association (MLA). Evite las abreviaciones de los
